Caleb's Dream| 42mins
Director: Elena Bedei | Producer: Mela Tomaselli
Focus Years: 2007 | Country: Italy
Synopsis:
With the simplicity of his 14 years, ten of which spent on the streets, Caleb Onka announces, from a Nairobi radio station, his personal electoral campaign. His speech is heard at the coast by a rapper, Flavour Polle, who transforms it into a captivating motif, a possible soundtrack for a hypothetical tour to publicize and share “Il Sogno di Caleb†in the whole country. A year later, in Italy, the song is chosen to represent Kenya at the "Zecchino d’Oro" Festival (Italy) with the title “Un Baby Presidente†and is sung by Brian Mzee Omondi, a 9-year old ex-street child coming from the same rehabilitation centre as Caleb, clinching second place in the finals of the foreigners’ section. From Italy, the song returns to Kenya at the start of 2007, the year of the electoral campaigns, representing the World Children’s Parliament at the World Social Forum in Nairobi. A story narrated through the voices of various characters who, like in a big relay race from one continent to another, pass to each other the torch: Caleb’s song. Including John Kimanzi, Caleb’s best friend and pitched by the press to be the future national welterweight boxing champion. Drawing on key interviews taken over the course of two years, Caleb’s and John’s growing doubts are about their convictions on diverse topics important to them: on religion, birth control, injustice and the very limited powers to make a difference.
