Toxic Detroit| 9mins
Director: William Noland | Producer: William Noland
Focus Years: 2011 | Country: United States
Synopsis:
As the city of Detroit struggles to bring itself back from the brink of ecological disaster and financial ruin, the burden of a toxic past weighs heavily on the city’s current residents. Once described as the “Paris of the West,†and later as the automotive capital of the world, Detroit today is bankrupt and seemingly unable to confront the toxic legacy of unbridled industrial production.
In TOXIC DETROIT, a father and daughter are seen fishing along the dangerously polluted River Rouge. Looming in the distance is Zug Island, once a marsh-filled peninsula and the site of a Native American burial ground for centuries. Detroit landmarks prominently featured in the film include the Packard Plant, the largest abandoned building in the United States, closed since 1957 and the Detroit Waste Incinerator, the largest solid waste incinerator in the United States. A surreal wasteland wordlessly confronts the viewer of the film, depicting an American city living a nightmare.
