Synopsis:
Before the enforcement of the Wildlife Protection Act, Pardhis would earn their livelihood from hunting wild animals . Their business of “flash tading†had its acceptance in the society. They would protect crops from the herbivorous wild animals and help the rulers in hunting. Indian rulers such as kings and nawabs would appoint Chitah Pardhi to train Chitahas in their shelter. Due to the great fall in the population of wild animals, government banned the hunting by imposing the Wildlife Protection Act. Because of this act, the the Pardhis' ancestral means of livelihood became a criminal offence overnight. In the absence of any other skill, the poor and illiterate Pardhis started poaching. They still indulge in illegal hunting. Nowadays they have become infamous for the poaching of tigers and lions. Their children, deprived of all basic amenities, have no option but to learn the same from their parents to earn a livelihood.
