Director: Shahjahan Siraj | Producer: Shahjahan Siraj
Focus Years: 2009 | Country: Bangladesh
Synopsis:
"Saving Seed, Saving Rice" focuses on the issue and efforts of saving seed in Bangladesh. The local seeds, particularly rice, are now under threat of disappearing, in the face of corporate aggression in agriculture, and food security is threatened by chemical fertilizer and pesticide use. The film tells the story of Naya Krishi Andolon (New Agriculture Movement) in Bangladesh, an inspirational activist movement intended to mobilize farmers to save rice and seed. The farmers, activists and organisers show the reality of their success stories and devotion to save seed. The documentary features the songs of the movement, composed by the farmers themselves, to encourage farmers and the community to engage in organic agriculture. With the public spirit, the farmers are now united and build a joint effort 'Seed Bank' (Bijar Akhra). In the seed bank they saved more than 3000 local species of rice and 700 species of local vegetable seeds. Thousands of Bangladeshi farmers are now involved and inspired with the Naya Krishi Andolon (New Agriculture Movement ). They are committed to not use hybrid seeds, fertilizer or pesticides. The farmers are now cultivating local species with eco-friendly organic agricultural methods.
