Synopsis:
The is a true story about the helplessness of Southwest Detroit community residents fighting for help against the oil companies. These residents reached out to the local Sierra Club, who began to organize residents in what became known as the "bucket brigade." Residents report the accumulation of toxic substances in their basements. The residents attempted to lobby the City Council to help them sell their houses. The smell was so terrible that they were unable to gather in the area to protest. The construction of the viaduct bridge and Marathon Oil Refinery combined to make it impossible to live healthy lives, between the dust and toxic substance. Ms. Rashida Talib, a candidate for City Council, came out to investigate. She was very disturbed and got involved. Families had to begin moving out. They feared for their children and the elderly. Despite all of the violations that were found, nothing seemed to be able to be done. The EPA agents who investigated the area chastised Marathon Oil Company. There were interviews with the different agencies they spoke with: Environmental Affairs, Water and Sewerage. Petroleum was found in the combined sewers. There is still one resident there, left alone and seemingly forgotten.
