Synopsis:
A result of some striking encounters with the Bhil community of Jhabua district in Central India, over a period of time between the years 1999-2003, the film attempts to explore some of the fast disappearing traditions particular to Jhabua. What drew us to the people in the beginning was the sheer vibrancy of their lifestyle despite the untold hardships that they have to face. They are one of the oldest and largest indigenous groups of India, living under relentless struggle for survival, threat of change and modernisation. Yet they seemed eager to retain their own identity. Their interactions with other communities around them, specially the Hindu brahaminical society at the socio-cultural plane, too evoked our interest. Pema Fatia a traditional Likhandari (painter by urban terminology) and Mana Bhai Baria the descendant of a family of Badwas (or priest doctor of the village) were the two faces of tradition, turmoil and change in the Bhil society. For a group, which has been dubbed as aggressive with criminal propensities, who today eke out a precarious survival from one difficult season to the other, their traditions display considerable depth and artistic sensibilities. Where everyday existence was harsh, the inner life was quite rich. They were constantly negotiating between their material conditions and spiritual and cultural life, and looking for answers there-in. All these put together motivated us to visually trace the mythical and the mundane aspects of Bhil life from a concerned point of view. The outcome has been a detailed documentation of their life-world caught in a time frame.
