Synopsis:
"About Fish & Revolution" is a story that comes very close to real life. With the admission of Poland and other Eastern European countries to the European Union, many people fear that their existence will be threatened - even though that fear is really unfounded. As a country, The Netherlands has been dug up, drained and demarcated. The population of The Netherlands live within the space of freedom they have been given. That may be a good thing, but it is also a little dull. In Eastern European countries, people’s behaviour in their environments knows fewer restraints. These people have had to fight for their freedom, living their lives with passion and romance, which may not always be as comfortable as ours. In “About Fish & Revolution”, these two separate worlds come together at an ordinary fishing pitch, at a not particularly special waterside, somewhere in the Netherlands. The basis of this drama lies in the contrast between those worlds. The world in which Gerard lives is a proverbial straitjacket. He feels that there is nothing that makes life worth living anymore. He is retired. In his working life, he was a truck driver. He was always on the road and while away from home, he lived a life of freedom. His marriage to Tine has become a drag, his friendships have dwindled and the fish he catches are too small. The humdrum of Gerard and Tine’s familiar, protected existence is disturbed by the arrival of a group of Polish people. The tone of the film is light, and the subtle humour raises a smile of recognition. The script consists of a series of scenes that pass before the viewer’s eyes as a succession of tableaux vivants. When combined, all these separate incidents - which at first sight seem no more than a ripple at the surface of day-to-day life - tell a great story of fear and longing.
