Surviving Evil| 1hr : 12mins
Director: Tsai Tsung-Lung | Producer: Tsai Tsung-Lung
Focus Years: 2008 | Country: Taiwan
Synopsis:
In 1979, two major events broke out in Taiwan that tell us something about the health care and political developments of the time. The PCB Poisoning Incident was the most dramatic tragedy in the history of Taiwanese public disasters. The Kaohsiung Incident was the turning point of Taiwan’s democracy movement.
After nearly three decades, Taiwan has become one of the democratic countries in Asia. But the PCB-poisoned victims have been dramatically and mysteriously evaporated from the earth. While filming this documentary, the film crew tried to locate the poisoned victims. Back then, they only found the blind kids at Huei-Ming school and townspeople of the impoverished areas, and managed to interview them for the scientific truth of the PCB poisoning incident. We were surprised by the fact that what happened in Taiwan turned out to be a copycat of the public disaster of Japan in this case, which was avoidable in the first place. The surviving victims and their second generation who had inherited the poison from birth have been left alone to fight the toxin of the century, which is flowing in their veins, with unswerving and strong will, they are still fighting quixotically in a never-ending struggle.
