Portrait of Khmissa: Water| 8mins
Director: Michelle Medina | Producer: Irene Production
Focus Years: 2006 | Country: Morocco
Synopsis:
This short portrait explores the ideas of blood and water. One term is beset with labels of identity and origins and the other is fluid, untamable, without color and capable of slipping away. Whether seen as blood or water, it composes 80 percent of our bodies and is our life source. As the opening dialog of the Jewish nurse in Casablanca explains, during Ramadan when Muslims cannot give their blood due to fasting, the Jewish community gives their blood. On this note, "Water" follows the messy movements of religion, titles, identity, and love that mirror the fluidity of water. Opening with Fatima, a woman in Casablanca, she tells the story of her parents. As the daughter of a Jewish mother and a Berber-Muslim father, Fatima speaks about the conversion of her mother and the love of her parents. In New York, Izza Genini, the first Moroccan woman to make a documentary, speaks about being Jewish, Moroccan, Berber and a film-maker: "I think all the politics today push people to be in a camp ... so you cannot be just a human being, you must be a human being with a (title) on you." Appearances by Izza Genini, Fatima, and Matin Scorsese.
