Synopsis:
Contact with parts of my family is broken. I have only a nebulous image of their past. My grandparents supposedly worked for the Stasi, the secret police of the GDR, located in East Berlin, and my father was part of the anti-terror squad. Their operations are buried in silence. This emotional and personal short film is the document of failure of finding answers, after they backed out of participating. ------------------------------------ There is no contact with my father and my grandparents any more. Too often we didn’t see or speak to each other for many years. It seems we never had a real relationship. About their past, which is my family’s history, I don’t know more than a few sentences or adumbrations. Normannenstraße – the street where the former headquarter of the Stasi, the ministry for the secret police, is located. Everyone of the former GDR knows that. Normannenstraße is where I grew up. My grandfather probably worked in the ministry for secret police, my father for the anti-terror squad. But no-one ever spoke about it. My efforts to break the silence about the past regularly failed. The whole part of the family abruptly and vehemently withdraw their initial consent to participate in a personal documentary film. What does it mean for a family and for their next generations? What will it mean for our daughter? This short film remains as a document of this failure and the helpless search for answers in a fragmentary recollection.
