Synopsis:
Joshua Wilkinson (27), the youngest Wilkinson father, has grown up between these two extremes: the great achievements of his parents and grandparents and the complementary hypocrisy behind their family history. By exposing four generations coming to terms with the consequences of personal sacrifice, this analysis begins with the Wilkinsons’ traditional interest for the well-being of the poor and the oppressed, a concern that has often been incompatible with their attention to their loved ones. This negligence shaped Jeffry’s bitterness toward his distracted father Frank (90), a man who has spent most of his life fighting for civil liberties and First Amendment freedoms. On the other hand Jeffry (62) is confronted by his son Joshua for physically abusing his mother despite his background as a peace lover and activist. Finally, Joshua is troubled by his own passions overshadowing his child, Benji. As a young filmmaker with a family of his own, Joshua sets off to understand the reasons behind this divide and struggles to find a way to reconcile it. By exposing unanswered questions, by demanding unspoken apologies, by rationalizing unresolved hostility, the film peaks in a poignant convergence of admission and revelation, uncovering the meaning of comprehension and thoughtfulness in fatherhood.
