Synopsis:
This film follows the Take Back the Land movement in Rochester, NY, a city that has seen the same kind of economic assault that other Rust Belt cities have of the northern U.S. Here we meet several activists that engage in this work, as well as on man, Leonard Spears, as he decides that he is going to do whatever it takes to stay in his home. We watch as this campaign evolves into protests and direct action, as well as the how the movement grows as Occupy Wallstreet begins to expand across the country. Demonstrations, civil disobedience, and housing liberation are all documented as a culture of resistance begins to form in response to dire economic situations. The film enters into the world of Occupy at the same time the housing movement does, watching it begin to dominate the conversation. While it begins to dominate the political organizing, we see as the two movements become complimentary and an entire generation begins to come together outside and in their community. This documentary looks at this crisis from those in the trenches, and follows them in their most confrontational moments: defiance and arrest. With music provided by artists like Matt & Kim, Murder by Death, and Flobots, we have a lyrical story of how people can come together to simply survive. Told through Leonard’s experience, the drive of radical activists, the story of homeless people looking for a place of their own, and even the police pitted as opponents, we see a story of what it means to have a home and what a neighborhood will do to ensure that everyone is cared for.
