Synopsis:
The Hainan Hakka are a little-known branch of the Hakka people. In their home far from the mainland, they have managed to maintain cultural traditions from the Central Plains, all the while living alongside other ethnic groups such as the Li and the Miao. However, modernity is slowly eroding their unique culture.
Under the Spotlight takes stock of the current state of customs, folk songs and architecture of the Hakka people in Nanfeng Village, Dan County. These are reflected in the stories of three generations of Hainan Hakka as we follow the elder folk singer Ye Fangkui, Yang Xiaobo, and the young Ye Weitong. Between transmitting traditions and embracing change, there is harmony but also conflict, even struggle; there are the joys and sorrows of life, as well as the flourishing and decline of a people. Faced with the changes of our times, Hainan Hakka folk culture is withering away. Luckily, a few solitary guardians of heritage maintain folk song traditions. But what will happen once they are gone deserves serious consideration.
