Synopsis:
Sinharaja Forest is a tropical rainforest in Sri Lanka designated as a World Heritage Site due to its high-level of biodiversity and virgin forest.
This forest consists of 11,000 hectares and about 15,000 people living in the peripheral villages around the forest. These villagers have been using this forest for their daily needs for the generations in a sustainable manner. The life of these villagers, food, folk knowledge and many more things are based on the forest from the ancient past.
At present, with the rapid changes taking place in society, these people have lost their intimate contact with the forest and at the same time it is causing a threat to it. Younger generation in this area are also losing their traditional knowledge. It is very important that this indigenous knowledge is preserved for the future generations. The lives of these villagers are now in transition.
