Synopsis:
Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Cuba lost access to 75% of its foreign imports and the nation entered a period of food scarcity known as "The Special Period." During this time Cubans lost an average of 10 lbs each, eventually leading the country to implement a system of small scale urban farms to meet national nutritional needs. Without the benefits of imported fertilizers and petroleum, these gardens were necessarily organic and local. Known as organoponicos, these mini urban farms have since grown to become a major source of sustainable domestic food production in Cuba, making the country an inadvertent leader in localized organic farming, as well as a model for the methodologies and communities surrounding these systems. This film came from 2 weeks spent in Cuba exploring these farms and the people who make them possible.
