Synopsis:
Often forgotten, as we seek to heal the wounds mankind has inflicted on our planet, is the simple virtue of balance. “The Wind That Blows” takes an unapologetic look at a group of Caribbean men who cherish such a balance. These men revere nature as they maintain their direct connection to it. Collectively, they have almost zero carbon footprint. They are humpback whale hunters. In the mid-19th century, Yankee whalers enlisted seamen from such places as tiny Bequia in the Grenadine Islands of the British West Indies. One enterprising recruit bought two whaleboats from the Yankees and Bequia’s history of whaling began. To the consternation of many, Bequia whalers continue the hunt to this day. Spanning an entire generation, “The Wind That Blows” objectively yet affectionately examines this unique group whose lives are entwined with nature, infinitely more so than any Prius driver. These stalwart men, in small hand-built sailboats with hand-thrown harpoons and lances, seek only sustenance for their family and neighbors but in the process provide something else: identity. Happily, humpback whales have rebounded, thanks to the moratorium on commercial whaling, and are no longer on the endangered list. The Bequia whalers received an allowance to continue from the International Whaling Commission in 1986 and have landed, on average, one whale per year since then. During the decades covered while filming this documentary, tourism became Bequia’s prime industry, luring young people away from the old trades and traditions. Hotels, restaurants, new roads, an airport and other “improvements” have transformed Bequia’s appearance... and its soul. Amidst the clamor of globalization, “The Wind That Blows” gives a deserved voice to a humble community on a tiny island clinging to a proud past while offering a singular perspective on humans and our environment.
