Synopsis:
The practice of burning wheat crop residual (the remaining part of the wheat crop left after the harvesting of wheat ears) is a common practice in central India especially in Madhya Pradesh. These crop residuals are generally known as “NARVAI” among farmers. Since NARVAI makes it difficult to prepare the land for the next crops, and the proper disposal by deep ploughing becomes costly to the farmers, they prefer to burn the crop residuals. These burning fields not only cause great harm to the fertility of the soil but also burn millions of flora and fauna within. According to estimates, on average 270 lakh hectare wheat is sown in India, one-fourth of whose residuals are burned like that. This practice of burning NARVAI worsens global warming by releasing tons of hot gases and smoke in the environment. The effects of climate change are being felt by the farmers of central India in the form of low rainfall and fluctuation in temperature, but they don’t know that they are also responsible (small share) for those changes in the climate.
