Synopsis:
Empress Maria Theresia, who gave birth to 16 children, punished the “abortion of the fetus” with death by the sword. Although her son Joseph II commuted this sentence to rigorous incarceration, the condemnation of abortion continued to be a heavy burden on women – for more than 170 years. The film "The Long Arm of the Empress" tells the stories of women who had an abortion illegally and shows the history of the campaigning for the liberalization of the abortion in Austria.
