Picking Up America| 16mins
Director: Michael Burke & Marie Wicht | Producer: Notre Dame University
Focus Years: 2010 | Country: United States
Synopsis:
On March 20, 2010, four young idealists set forth from Assateague Island, Maryland, with one mission in mind: to complete the county's first continuous coast-to-coast roadside litter cleanup. Last year, Jeff Chen, Davey Rogner, Kim Alexander and Kelly Klein walked from the shores of Maryland to Ripley, Ohio - picking up over 75,000 pounds of trash along the way. Student film-makers Michael Burke and Marie Wicht documented the last leg of their journey from the Kentucky/Ohio border to Ripley, Ohio. Chen, Rogner and Alexander, as well as "trashtern" Johnna Jackson shared their experiences from the road, and offered up ways to reduce waste as a society. This year, Chen, Rogner and Jackson will walk from Ripley, Ohio, to Denver, continuing to spread a message of zero-waste. As evidenced by this short film, these "Pick Up Artists" care greatly for Mother Nature and her well being, and hope you do too.
