Synopsis:
The creation of the biggest European edifice after World War II mirrors human beings struggling with the forces of the nature and their own vulnerability to provide the energy for a demanding society. Between 1950 and 1966, thousands of men moved up to the Swiss Alps in the Valais, a natural landscape of rocks and ice. On rough cliffs they built a civilization limited in time. They blew up a 160 kilometer-long tunnel labyrinth into the rocks, beneath the Matterhorn and several other gigantic mountains. For the purpose to provide electricity, the water here runs from 35 glaciers to the highest dam of the world, the Grande Dixence. The film-maker Edgar Hagen returns with some of the veterans to the dark and magic places inside an archaic alpine landscape. It was here where they mastered life crisis, escaped the poverty of their families and met with loneliness, sickness and death.
