Synopsis:
This natural science documentary is an intimate examination of how a number of Canadian wild creatures survive the quintessential Canadian experience - the severe winter cold of the western prairies. What are the biological and behavioral adaptations that allow creatures endowed with little more than a modest covering of feathers or fur, to survive under conditions that would end our human lives in a matter of hours, were it not for the extensive technology we have devised to deal with the cold? How do they find food, shelter, and protection from the worst that winter can dish out? From the smallest field mouse and chickadee to the whitetail deer, the documentary tracks the struggle to survive from the turning of autumn leaves, to the birth of a fawn in spring. Shot exclusively in western Canada, this documentary will show to Canadians and the world just how marvelous are the adaptations which have developed to allow survival in even the harshest of prairie winter conditions.
