Synopsis:
Filmed undercover and without the knowledge or authority of the Indonesian authorities, “Forgotten Bird of Paradise” provides a rare and moving insight into the forgotten struggle for independence that has gripped West Papua for over 45 years. The documentary features never before seen footage of West Papuan rebel fighters at their stronghold deep in the jungle, as well as interviews with human rights victims and a secret interview with political prisoner Yusak Pakage. Film-maker Dominic Brown reflected that the situation in West Papua was “like apartheid”, and likened the transmigration program and anti-secession policies to genocide.
