Synopsis:
In the 1940s and '50s it is estimated that there were a staggering 300,000 bicycles on the roads of Northern Ireland. As a sporting machine, they produced athletes who performed feats of endurance, breaking records and striving for perfection. Passionate cyclists Isabel Woods (83), Rab Collins (84), and Bill Kirk (75) with a writer, May Farrar, have compiled "Recycled Memories," a book that is an evocative anthology describing those days and the people and events involved in cycling over the years. "Rose Petals on the Path" is a short documentary film inspired by the book. I met Bill Kirk on the occasion of his photography exhibition in The Red Barn Gallery where I discovered how passionate about cycling he is. Impressed with the fact that at the age of 75 he is an active cyclist, I got tempted by the ‘Recycled Memories’ book. That is where the project starts. And what made it happen is Isabel, May, Rab and Bill’s eternal love for cycling and their great enthusiasm and hospitality, which I was lucky to experience while working on the project. The film introduces the editors of the publication and takes the audience through their memories over the years. Through their stories, the film explores how cycling helps to overcome weaknesses, if it influences perceptions of reality, and simply proves the importance of sport in our lives.
