Synopsis:
Stephen Pautard is a young disabled boy coming up to his 21st birthday. He has always lived with his mother and attends many centres in Rochdale and receives many services from the local authority which gives him independence away from his mother Heather and gives his mum a break from being a full time carer. In 2009 Stephen and his mother were given a scare and told that Stephens eye sight may degenerate within a short period, further to his other degenerative illnesses that he suffers from. Heather is a devout christian and attends the local Evangelical Church in Rochdale which is where she met Louise from a local charity Agapao. Agapao and Louise offered to let Stephen fulfill his dream to complete his gold duke of Edinburgh by taking a trip to Uganda in 2009 with them and a group they were taking from Liverpool. The film follows Stephen as he first of all attends various centres in Manchester, including day centres and his work experience at the Transport Museum in Manchester. Stephen attends physio therapy and eye clinics in order to get himself prepared for the trip to Uganda. The film explores his relationship with his mother Heather and how that effects his own independence and disability and how that change of environment can really work wonders for people who are otherwise so dependent. We see Stephan's as he explores his new surroundings in one of the poorest countries in the world and re-evaluates his life from what he experiences. Will this trip change Stephens life forever and be a true coming of age in the way anybody else may experience from moving out of home or going onto university.
