He came to Malmoe nearly twelve years ago. As the Vatican’s special envoy, a catholic bishop dressed in a cloak and stick – Father Mac. In a short time he conquered the city, invited generously and made many friends. During one year, Father Mac won the confidence of everyone; he conducted weddings - which we have on film - and started to invest the newfound friend’s money in faked deals with paintings. Lots of money - he handled millions. The 9th of July 1996, fifteen, to each other unknown persons, gathered outside Father Mac’s apartment. This was the day when they were supposed to get their dividend on their investments. The apartment was abandoned. On the table, a cassette tape - a tape which we have. The voice of the bishop: “Everything has been a lie. When you hear this I’m no longer alive.” When the police arrived they met the shaken people of Malmoe, deceived on all their assets. The police started the search, looking for clues - we have that film, too. Some confused days and nights followed. Where was he? And who was he? Dead he was not. Neither a catholic bishop. But maybe one of the greatest swindlers in modern time. His real name was György Zemplenyi, wanted by Interpol in 38 countries. In Hungary 1992 he was the leader of the national team of the Olympic Games in swimming, but disappeared with 10 million dollars of the sponsor money. (He did not even know how to swim – that he learned at Aqua-fun in Malmoe three years later.) In Israel, he posed as an orthodox Jew, dealing with diamonds, but swapped the diamonds worth 25 million dollars to glass. One night he films his home and suddenly his face is revealed in a mirror. We have that film too! It is said that he died during the trial in Hungary 1999, but hardly no one believes in his death. “I am a 100% sure that I saw him at Möllevångstorget last year” says Tony, one of the deceived. The private detective in Israel, the chief of police in Budapest, the police in Sweden: ” He is not dead, he is most surely in some other part of the world deceiving new people”.
