Synopsis:
Dushyanthi Nugawela Wijeyawardena hails from an old Kandyan family. Her grandfather was the Diyawadana Nilame of the Sri Dalada Maligawa, custodian of the Temple of the Tooth. Her father was a minister in the first cabinet of independent Ceylon. She remembers her parents and how, with her father's Buddhist roots and mother's Christian faith, her parents raised the family to respect both Christianity and Buddhism. This portrait is part of the 'I Am' series, a multimedia project looking at identity through the lives of Sri Lankan elders. The project is trying to engage people with oral history and, through the wisdom of these wonderful elders, to challenge perceptions of identity and explore how this could help bring communities together.
