Synopsis:
In the summer of 2010, North Carolina potter Daniel Johnston began an ambitious project to create 100 large (approximately 40 gallons each) ceramic jars in 50 days and to sell them all in one day. The jars were made using a unique pottery technique that Johnston learned while working with native potters in northeast Thailand. Each vessel was made of local North Carolina stoneware clay, decorated with refined local minerals, and fired to approximately 2400° Fahrenheit in Johnston’s large wood fired kiln. 4000 Gallons follows the progress of the project from processing the clay to the intense final sale and provides some insight into the evolution of Johnston’s thinking about the project and its influence on his ongoing artistic development.
