Focus Years: 2009 | Country: Ireland
Synopsis:
Internationally acclaimed for his one-man Catalpa performances, Donal O'Kelly, cult performer, actor, writer and political activist, tours his new play around Ireland in his van with a motley cast and crew. After a bad review and a disappointing run he heads back home to Dublin, somewhat bruised, but reflecting with insight and humour on his own life's journey and the purpose of art in society.
A profound but humorous portrait of an artist by filmmaker Trish McAdam who searches for the humanity behind the artist at work, the inspirations, the disappointments and the dogged optimism.
After long rehearsals and an opening night, in Dublin, of his colourful, singing and dancing play "Vive La", about 1798 Irish rebels, Donal receives bad reviews. After brushing this off, the fearlessly optimistic Donal heads out on tour, confident his cult audience will be waiting for him. However small ticket sales force Donal to dig deep and face his worst fears. Here he shows generous openness, humour and honesty. Months later we return to find him with renewed optimism as he ventures out with a second play, Running Beast, a one man tour de force about Irish legend Hugh O'Neill, this time touring Europe.
