Crossings (1): Documentary of an Interactive Installation : Director: Nina Yankowitz | Genre: Documentary | Produced In: 2009
Synopsis: A projection of an abstracted multi-faith cathedral rotates slowly on an exterior entry wall while people enter a virtual religious space. Visitors walk on a mosaic floor projection, of patterns used in cathedrals and temples around the globe, and hear scriptures read in various languages over a soundtrack of electronically altered voices. Participants are instructed to choose words (topics) to explore with an infrared wand. They move/place words along lines adjusting relative importance that the Old Testament, New Testament, Buddhist texts, Hindu texts, and the Quran articulate. Texts are observed displaying results the Kaipainen multi-perspective ontospace search engine is discovering in the database. Afterwards, they learn from which religions their color-coded texts originated. They can print/autograph their selections by clicking on the SAVE button to reveal their text results at a dedicated website. The underlying theme is that world conflicts are fueled by religious intolerance and misunderstandings.
