Synopsis: More than 5,000 ink and wash artworks contributed by artists and students were placed floating in the fountain and destroyed at Kitchener City Hall, Canada. During 1880-1885, about 15,000 Chinese workers were sent from China to assist in construction of the most treacherous part of the western section of the CP Railway. By the time the construction finished, about 5,000 Chinese workers lost their lives on the job, most of them were left in unnamed graves along the railway without proper burials. The art project was created as a symbolic Buddhist ritual to commemorate the Chinese laborers, symbolically setting their spirits free. (Among the perished was the artist’s children’s great great grandfather.) Part of a site-specific installation for Contemporary Art Forum Kitchener and Area.02 (CAFKA 2002) by David Cheung.
