Visions of Paradise : Director: Anne Verhoijsen | Genre: Documentary | Produced In: 2008
Synopsis: What does your Garden of Eden look like? What part would you want to play in it? In "Visions of Paradise", visual artist Anne Verhoijsen looks at how people from different countries view the Genesis story. Her questions yield a wide variety of responses. From a joking: “I would have eaten the woman” to “Everyone has his own paradise”, the film displays a kaleidoscopic image of people’s deepest desires and their perception of reality while they imagine paradise. The age-old Genesis story can be found in the Bible, Vedas, the Koran and the Torah. To make the film, director Anne Verhoijsen travelled throughout the Netherlands, Turkey, Hawaii, Latvia, Italy, Surinam, Aruba, Morocco and Bosnia. "Visions of Paradise" demonstrates that the differences between these cultures are less pronounced than we are often led to believe. The image of paradise acts as a free zone and provides a clear reflection of people’s deepest desires. From deep-seated faith to deep suspicion of divine power or religious bodies. "Visions of Paradise" also shows how social and societal circumstances influence people’s personal vision of paradise.
