Director: Max Hattler | Producer: Max Hattler
Focus Years: 2005 | Country: United Kingdom
Synopsis:
I am interested in the space between abstraction and figuration, where storytelling is freed from the constraints of traditional narrative. My work contemplates microcosms, moments, atmospheres: close-ups as reflections on the big picture. While my films tend to be without dialogue, they explore the relationship between sound, music and the moving image. "Collision" explores graphic art as a metaphor. By discarding traditional storytelling, this short film presents a marriage of image and sound to produce a kaleidoscopic take on our turbulent political situation. The aim of the film is to be subtle and bold at the same time, and to mesmerize the viewer with a forceful command of symbols, detaching these from their established context and applying their language in the service of an alternative reality. The basics of "Collision" are constituted by the colors and shapes of flags. The green of Islam is potently contrasted with the American red and blue, mixed again with the graphic patterns that are central to the heritage and identity of these cultures.
