Synopsis: First lives can differ greatly, depending on the lessons one chooses to learn. Young souls are urged in their pre-life class to choose carefully and follow six easy steps to guide them through their first of many incarnations. Unfortunately, young souls do not make the best students. Robert Kenny, distracted by his buddy, remedial first lifer, Wayne, and his agreed-upon soul mate, Amber, is ill-equipped when time comes for him to be born. His subsequent growing up is riddled with loneliness as Amber, so good at living that she keeps dying, visits him many times as an "imaginary friend" through his childhood. On his fortieth birthday, Robert is stuck on the fifth step of life. He’s a womanizer, a painter who hasn't painted in a year, and best friends with the incarnate of Wayne, an alcoholic who is failing yet another first life. Followed by a witness from the before life, Mrs. Green, who tries with all her might to guide him to do something - anything! - Robert stumbles upon Amber once more. Their linear age gap has widened. This is the last chance in either of their lives to be together. Will a frustrated middle-aged womanizer and a cynical, yet hopeful searcher recognize each other as the soulmates they had agreed to be?
