Synopsis:
The short documentary "Sun for Rent" tells the story of the NGO Ecofinder Kenya. It rents out solar lamps in remote areas of western Kenya. Thus the organization not only brings eco-friendly light sources to the people, but also creates jobs in the area. Year after year, thousands of young people take part in the weltwärts program, a volunteer initiative of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. They actively learn what development cooperation means. In doing so, they get to know ideas and initiatives that may hold solutions for global problems. In the project "Ideen.Transfair", four young filmmakers from India, Kenya, Colombia and Togo present exemplary ideas in short films that they created together with weltwärts volunteers. Through the films these ideas embark on a journey – in order to be seen and spread by as many viewers as possible. "Ideen.Transfair" is a project implemented by Arbeitsstelle Weltbilder e.V. and WELTFILME.org and was made possible with financial support from German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Dircetor KIIRŨ NGOTHO about his film "Sun for Rent": "My goal was to give a human face to the project Solar Lamp Entrepreneurs. Thus I want the audience to see the impact solar energy has on our lives and also the possibilities for the future, both in Africa and the whole world." Kiirũ Ngotho was born in Kenya and studied at the College of Arts in Namibia. As a filmmaker and photographer, he has worked on several documentaries for social institutions and NGOs. He also works as a creative media instructor for various grass-root media initiatives. NICOLAS KAWERAU, weltwärts volunteer at Ecofinder Kenya, says: "I would like to spread the idea of renting out lights to other parts of the world, where it could serve as a model and be the impetus to help people without access to electrical power. I aim to share concepts of sustainability and renewable energy sources that mankind needs to become aware of."
