"New York 45" is a film about how a group of 45 people from New York perceive their city. New York City is viewed by many as the center of our Western world and actually is a whole wondrous, complex, and tragic world. These 45 people are from different backgrounds, ages, and races; although they are born in New York, elsewhere in America or abroad, first they are New Yorkers. Through what they say, love or dislike, appreciate or lament about New York, the film withdraws this single comment: Through the eyes of the filmmaker's gang, we review the inherent qualities and problems of the city that surface amongst New Yorkers, combined with the filmmaker's personal observations and criticisms as narration. In addition to their declarations and descriptions of how complex New York City really is, the film explores how different and unique it is from any other place in the world and how fascinating it simply is. The narration eventually becomes multi-voiced. Over their rainbow appearances, the film explores a modern New York, post 9/11, and looking towards the future. In the incredible arena that this city is, the film tries to demonstrate how everyone, wealthy or poor, young or older, American or not—everyone at the end, and everywhere, everyone is so similar. Everyone is sad and happy, regretful and hopeful, funny, ecstatic or angry, and even strange sometimes.
