During a 50,000 km, fourteen month road tour of Australia between 2005/6 the film makers encountered 89 year old Helmut. Living alone and remotely for nearly 40 years in a hand-built house on the bed of one of the largest rivers in the country, he was wearing only a loin cloth when they arrived unannounced. Filmed over just two days, the film makers managed to build a rapport with Helmut, enabling them to record their conversations. During the wet season, with the river in full flow, Helmut would retreat to the upper level of his home as the river cut a path through the living quarters, waiting for it to subside. In this film Helmut shares his thoughts and philosophies, and the viewer is privy to a fascinating insight into his life in the wilderness. Helmut is no longer alive, although his legacy is preserved within Helmuts House - a portrait of an original character leading a truly unconventional lifestyle and a rare document of a unique encounter with a remarkable human being.
