Thanks for stopping by and learning more about the criminal justice system and the toll it takes on citizens across the U.S. This short documentary series was developed as a catalyst for dialogue in communities to better understand the human and economic impact associated with incarceration and reentry back into society after prison. The series was developed in coordination with legislative objectives to educate and engage citizens about prison reform in New Jersey, where it costs $50,000 per year to incarcerate each prisoner, the same price as attending an Ivy League university, but without the skills necessary to successfully return home and into the workforce. It would be best to watch a "Failed System" first as it is meant as an introduction, then "Nowhere to Go" about the housing issue after people leave prison, and finally "Healing Justice" which highlights the stories of people who successfully reentered back into their communities to build careers and a strong future for themselves and their families. Since first launched this advocacy film series has been used for community screenings and seen on public access television across the US. An upcoming screening will be held in Juneau, Alaska in 2013. Synopsis:
"Nowhere to Go" highlights the need for, and barriers to, safe, stable housing. Through testimonies of impassioned advocates and previously incarcerated individuals, this video presents the options of housing including streets, shelters, transitional living facilities, family homes, and permanent supportive housing. As formally incarcerated people are often challenged by issues of addiction, mental health, and violence, the type of housing available to a person drastically impacts their ability to successfully re-enter society and realize their full potential. "Nowhere To Go" provides urgent and critical insight into how we can provide the best supportive structure possible to ensure their success. Directed and produced for American Friends Service Committee by Voices of Hope Productions.
