Marc Schwinges

Greetings from South Africa.
Hi and thanks for looking at my page!

I am Executive Producer on the film Two Moms, and have a history of producing many important films and transmedia projects in South Africa.

I am pioneer Digital Content Strategist at the intersection of marketing and entertainment on television, the web and mobile. I have produced a substantial volume of award-winning work, spanning commercials production, drama, reality television as well as documentary and on-line platforms, all of which has been seen and recognised the world over. As a cross-media expert, I consult to and provides television and interactive expertise to major multinational corporations, NGOs, governments and broadcasters. I have significant and unique expertise in South Africa’s rebate schemes as well as South African international co-production treaties and related scheme benefits.

I present at numerous international forums and conferences, most recently for the second time at the world’s largest documentary festival, IDFA in Amsterdam. I have also spoken for South Africa at North America’s largest documentary market, HotDocs in Toronto, as well as on several panels at the Durban FilmMart, P2P Documentary Conference and The Broadcast Show.

I am honoured and humbled to have been recognised by my peers in the South African independent production sector, and am an active participant in several industry bodies. I was former chairperson and am currently consultant to the industry’s umbrella body, the South African Screen Federation. I am a previous chairperson of the Independent Producer’s Organisation, honorary member of the Documentary Filmmaker’s Association, I sit on the management committee of the Support Public Broadcasting Coalition, and I am Pan African executive committee member for the Goethe / ACP Financed online initiative Mokolo.net.

For two decades I have been CEO and Executive Producer of Underdog Productions, which I co-founded in 1993 as the first cross-media company in South Africa. Additionally I run my own digital content strategy, consulting and distribution firm, Transmedia Africa, and continuing my belief in developing the black talent of South Africa I co-founded the documentary incubator Hybrid Docs.

I recently produced an innovative 13-part travel, food and lifestyle TV series called Rough or Smooth. The show features two of South Africa's top soap stars who travel Africa, visiting some of the most remarkable and eclectic places and show the very different sides to the same destinations, hence Rough or Smooth.

Other work I am most proud of includes the documentaries Death, Metamorphosis, Two Moms, Black Beulahs, Flush, and the Woman of the Year Awards.

I continue to develop properties, and try to find innovative ways of maximising ownership in the finance models to produce the properties, and so we are able to produce work independently of the broadcasters commissioning model. I also continue to assist producers and broadcasters from around the world in navigating the world of transmedia storytelling, as well as providing unique local production expertise and hands on co-production guidance.

Synopsis:
"Meet an ordinary family of extraordinary people (plus six dogs and four cats)”. The documentary charts the daily life of lesbian couple Suzanne Du Toit and Anna-Marié De Vos, as well as their historic struggle to legally adopt children, be accepted by their community and receive equal treatment under the law in South Africa. De Vos was the only female High Court judge in Pretoria, South Africa, working in a conservative and male dominated realm. Her life-partner of fifteen years, Du Toit, is an artist who also manages the family farm near Plettenberg Bay. In 1994 Anna Marié adopted siblings of 'mixed race', Nuschka and Reid; together the couple nurtured the children. Then a near serious car accident highlighted the inadequacies of their situation. In 2001 the women challenged South African child adoption laws and demanded the right to be equal legal parents to their children. They won the case, changed the law, made international headlines and forever legalised the rights of gay and lesbian co-adoptive parents in South Africa. This several years before gay marriages were legalised in the same country. Two Moms takes an intimate and human look at this family, exploring the people behind the headlines, and makes a case for focusing on the similarities between us, as opposed to our differences. 48 minutes Directors: Luiz DeBarros & Andile Genge
