Synopsis:
Yunes is a young criminal. He has to come before the juvenile judge for robbing a tourist. He is one of the fourteen children who appears in the documentary Juvenile Judge, as a suspect and also because he’s been placed in a custodial facility and can’t go home. In 90 minutes, sad, cheerful, angry, big and small cases are presented in the film. Two sisters who can’t live with their mother anymore and who would rather stay in a foster family; a young pyromaniac; a seasoned burglar; a drug-addicted mother who wants her baby back; a shoplifter; an aggressive girl who hits out; and a girl who has been disowned by her mother. They all appear in this film that shows how juvenile judges decide on their fate. Children’s hearings are always behind closed doors. For the first time, this film shows publicly how juvenile judges go about their work. It gives a unique view into a world that has been closed to the public until now. In the documentary, one of the juvenile judges, Fred Salomon, announces that he is quitting. He no longer works as a juvenile judge. He couldn’t handle it anymore that, for example, he had to lock up children for months at a time because there was no spot available in a facility where they should have been treated voluntarily. He says: “It’s about children who are damaged and who may become irreparably damaged when nothing happens. Those are the facts. Some can stand them better than others. I can’t really stand it anymore. Next case.”
