“The Way of the Heart” is a documentary about a remarkable Indian teacher and mystic, Hazrat Inayat Khan, who exactly one hundred years ago brought something remarkable to the West – the ancient tradition of Sufism. Not a religion in the conventional sense, these teachings appealed greatly, and still appeal to many westerners looking for a deeper meaning to life through meditation and a series of spiritual exercises. As a documentary filmmaker who had travelled the world and made many films on religious subjects, I was attracted by the very fact that Hazrat Inayat Khan did not reject conventional forms of religious faith but rather added to them and deepened the experience of the seeker after truth. Today, the Sufi movement to which he gave birth flourishes throughout the world. Filming took place in India at his tomb, in the United States, in England, Germany and Holland.
