Synopsis:
Her Words: Storytelling with Saris is a collaborative printmaking and story project highlighting the achievement of literacy by women in the remote island community of Katakhali, Bangladesh, which is artist/activist Monica Jahan Bose’s ancestral village and part of an eco-empowerment program started by Samhati, a US-based non-profit group of Bangladeshi-American women. Katakhali village is located on the island of Barobaishdia in Patuakhali District and is one of the southernmost islands of Bangladesh, an area severely impacted by climate change. In Storytelling with Saris, Bose collaborates with 12 Katakhali women who have survived successive cyclones, learned to read, and rebuilt their lives. The footage of this film is from sari printmaking and writing workshops that Bose organized and interviews she conducted during her visit to Katakhali in January 2013. New York-based Bangladeshi filmmaker Nandita Ahmed came with Bose to document the project. The 12 women collaborated with Bose to create 24 saris covered with words and images. The project continues with further writing by the Katakhali women in journals, sari printing, performances using the saris, a book, exhibitions, and events around the world. Storytelling with Saris presents the stories of an inspiring community that is expected to disappear due to global warming unless immediate measures are taken by the world.
