The subject of this 24-minute experimental documentary, shot with DV, is an outdoor step in an old housing estate (built in 1980) for miners which worked in an exhausted, heavy-industry city with a more than 100 years of mining history in the north part of China. The 36 steps, linking two living sections separated by nature, is the only way for the residents to commute between home and factory, office, school, the food market, etc. From a short-term viewpoint, some certain people show up around it everyday at certain time as punctually as a pendulum. But from a long-term angle, it is totally different if we trace the past several decades back or look out over the future decades: those who left here can never step onto the steps, the dead and the dying as well. At the same time, some newly step onto it, the learning-to-walk kids for instance. Hence, every time people pass the step, they experience one life and death process', the past decaying and the future budding. Then, the step becomes a symbol, symbolizing the palingenesis. On the other hand, the step is a face. Due to the various people walking on it, it has various expressions. And the weather changing forms its emotion.
