Synopsis:
The whole world knows about Sicily, but Sicily is too often associated with the Mafia.
Corleone is, in the world, the symbol of the Mafia's godfather, and it is precisely in Corleone that a new revolutionary way to fight the Mafia kicks off. A new reality made up of dreams, hopes, and the hard work of young people who believe in the authority of the law.
The Mafia's lands, which had been the symbol of their power, were seized.
The local authorities decided to hand over the land as a gratuitous loan to unemployed young people. It was the start of a new venture in Sicily with the aim of changing the mentality and way of life behind the Mafia.
Our documentary follows the journey of the young people who formed the Pio La Torre Cooperative, farming the 100 hectares allotted to them.
It describes their hopes, dreams, difficulties, triumphs and disappointments.
Working the land in a small village is not easy when you don’t even know whose side your neighbor is on. There is danger of interference, of threats. It is very stressful to work the land knowing that you are constantly being watched; your every move is being recorded, where often the field next to yours still belongs to a Mafia family. They had to learn to live together and share decision-making - among which the onerous one of investing the small amount of money available to buy seeds, and not seeing any profits until after the harvest. For an entire year, they worked for free. Some left, but most of them resisted.
The dream to work legally, to be able to build a future without having to emigrate, has become a reality.
