“EVERY DAY’S LITTLE PLEASURES” Imagine that you have spent a productive youth and reached a point in your life where you have accomplished the majority of your goals. You have raised healthy, well-mannered children; your mortgage is paid off or very nearly so. You are now starting to think about those dreams you’ve long held and how you might turn them into reality ... perhaps it’s that vacation in Hawaii you’ve always promised yourself; or maybe you’re searching for that perfect four-wheel drive. Then suddenly, something changes. You have had no disaster, no accident, no upheaval, but something has happened within yourself. In the beginning, you don’t talk about it, hoping the strange feelings will disappear. One day you say it aloud, and there’s no turning back. You’ve realized that the possessions or experiences you had thought so important really have no meaning ... that what is significant in life comes from doing something for others. And with that flash, comes wisdom. It was this burst of understanding that sparked Ingrid and Bruce Campbell of Cambridge, Ontario, Canada. The couple had healthy children of their own, but in that fateful moment, they all decided to give up their consumer dreams and devote themselves to those in need. In each instance, they chose to adopt several children, specifically children known as “hard to place”, with various physical or mental handicaps. Raising disabled children changes people’s existence and presents them with new and often difficult challenges. With their family lives as the backdrop, this story will explore the psychology and reasoning behind their decisions. These are typical people, with the same hopes and dreams as the rest of us, and yet they followed a very different path.
