Synopsis:
Every Friday, hundreds of followers gather by a tomb just across the Nile from Sudan’s capital, Khartoum. This is the resting place of Sufi saint, Sheikh Hamad Al Nil. The tomb and its courtyard are the site of an extraordinarily joyful religious ritual. There, the saint’s followers chant, sing, dance, and pray to reach a state of direct personal communication with God. The dusty open space in front of the shrine is suffused with a sense of peace, grace, and unity. This delicate and intimate portrayal of a forgotten world reminds us of an often overlooked aspect of Islam.
