The Green Deal| 30mins
Director: Anthony Wandemburg | Producer: Global Witness
Focus Years: 2005 | Country: United Kingdom
Synopsis:
Logging companies have devastated Cambodia's forests. Back in 1998, the World Bank calculated that its forests had already been reduced by 30% in as many years. Today, despite official government rhetoric, deforestation is still progressing fast. The Green Deal highlights how logging companies with close connections to the government have continued to operate illegally, under the guise of rubber plantations. It also documents firsthand the destruction their activities have brought about and the local communities whose lives have been ruined as a result. Ultimately, however, given climate change and the steady shrinking of the world's forestry reserves, the tragedy of Cambodia's vanishing forests clearly has a far wider impact. The only uncertainty is whether what remains of Cambodia's forest can be conserved.
