Synopsis:
"The Silent Darkness" is the story of a young orphaned girl growing up amidst the violent political turbulence of the separatist movement in Assam. Her grandfather was a freedom fighter in the Indian Struggle for Independence and the father had joined the armed separatist movement after becoming disillusioned with Indian democracy. Deeply troubled by the frequent rapes committed by the army in the name of counter-insurgency, the grandfather decides to give away the girl to a childless couple. At the wake of the Dhemaji Bomb Blasts 2004, where thirteen school-children who were killed while celebrating Independence Day against the diktats of the insurgents, the girl is deeply shaken and prays for peace in her state. India’s northeastern state of Assam has been reeling under a brutal separatist movement and several other ethnicity based insurgencies for the last thirty years. On both sides, around 30,000 people have died — a number that increases every day.
