Synopsis:
"Wide is the Sea" is the first film of dilogy on the Rybinsk Sea. The film is devoted the tragedy of creation of the Rybinsk water reservoir by the USSR in 1938, the biggest man-made sea on the Earth, the symbol of man's victory over nature. "A man is the Master of Nature": to transform nature at his will, to build a paradise on Earth - these are some of Lenin's and Stalin's ideas. The epoch of grandiose tasks, great changes and enthusiasm however turns into tragedy and disaster for millions of people. The 150,000 prisoners of the Gulag realized it to be one of the most ambitious of Stalin's projects. A total of 800 villages, three towns, five monasteries and hundreds of old cemeteries were submerged. Thousands of people lost their homes. Their fathers’ and grandfathers’ graves have been flooded. But they name themselves mologzhans, the residents of flooded Mologa town, as they still believe that one day the sea will go away!
