The Fight for Food| 18mins
Director: Shikha Trivedy | Producer: NDTV
Focus Years: 2011 | Country: India
Subject Tags: asia, food, india, politics, poverty, water

Synopsis:
In areas where employment generation schemes like MGNREGS have been vigorously implemented and corruption has been kept in check, the food security of families below the official poverty line has improved. For instance, until 5 years ago, cases of starvation deaths were routine amongst primitive tribes like the Sahariyas of Rajasthan, but the turnaround has been remarkable, similarly so in Andhra Pradesh. On the other hand, a large number of families above the poverty line are on the brink of starvation because they cannot access schemes meant for families below the poverty line.
