Synopsis:
The state of Odisha on India's east coast is one of only three places in the world where olive ridley sea turtles gather by the tens of thousands to lay their eggs. The turtles arrive in the coast waters of the state from the Indian ocean south of Sri Lanka in October, and come ashore to nest between December and March. Sadly, this is also the peak fishing season. Thousands of turtles get accidentally entrapped in the nets of mechanized fishing boats and drown. Cast into the sea by the fishermen, their bodies wash ashore, dotting the beaches with rotting carcasses. Although patrolling the areas in the sea where the turtles congregate could minimize such deaths, no action has been taken to do so. Other problems bedevil the turtles, such as casuarina plantations on the beach and bright lights.
